Straight Pen vs. Oblique Pen: Which One Should You Use for Modern Calligraphy?

Straight vs Oblique Calligraphy Pen - which pen to use for modern calligraphy

If you're diving into modern calligraphy and wondering whether to start with a straight pen or an oblique pen, you're not alone. It's one of the first questions beginners face - and while it might seem like a small detail, the pen you choose can have a big impact on how enjoyable (and effective) your calligraphy practice is.

Let’s break it down…

What’s the Difference?

  • Straight Pen: The nib points straight ahead, aligned with the handle. It’s simple, familiar, and often feels like a “safe” choice - especially if you’re used to regular pens and pencils.

  • Oblique Pen: This one has a small flange that holds the nib off to the side. It might look odd at first, but it’s designed to help you create the slanted strokes that are characteristic of modern (and Copperplate-style) calligraphy with less strain on your wrist.

Why It Matters

When you're writing in a modern calligraphy style - especially with a right-leaning script - angle is everything. A straight pen can sometimes make it tricky to achieve that consistent slant, especially if you're right-handed.

In fact, when I first started out, I used a straight pen for months. But the moment I tried an oblique pen, everything changed. It felt like an extension of my arm rather than something I was fighting with. The ink flowed more smoothly, my letters looked more even, and - best of all - the process felt effortless.

I love that you can see more of what you’re writing on the page as your hand isn’t blocking your vision and there seems to be a bit more flexibility and give to the pen too, making it more comfortable.

Left-Handed? Read This First

If you're a leftie, a straight pen is usually the better option - especially if you're an over-writer (your hand curves over the top of the line as you write). But as with all things calligraphy, nothing is one-size-fits-all.

You Might Prefer an Oblique Pen If…

If you're experiencing any of these frustrations, an oblique pen might be just what you need:

  • Your nib makes a scratchy sound as it moves across the paper

  • The nib keeps catching or snagging, especially on upstrokes

  • Ink feathers unevenly, or your strokes don’t look smooth

  • You have to turn your paper sideways just to get the right angle (and then can barely see what you're doing!)

Sound familiar? Then definitely give the oblique pen a try. About half the people who try one in my workshops end up falling in love with it - even if they were skeptical at first.

Finding the Right Fit

Modern calligraphy is all about expressing your own style and that includes how you feel with the tools in your hand. It might take some experimenting, but finding the pen that fits you can completely change your experience.
